Can't Install

i have a athlon 3200 64 bit proc, 1.5 gig of ram 80 gig hd and a gigabyte mobo. when i go to install vista 64 it says, loading windows files, when the bar fills up, going all the way across the screen, the system reboots, and asks to boot from cd again. if i do not click anything, it boots my xp install, if i do press a key, it does the loading windows files again, its a never ending thing, it just keeps doing it over and over. any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have the cd as first boot device in bios? Maybe it should be boot the hdd first and then when you click on nothing (I've had the same experience) the drive that you are installing to will boot. You don't want to boot from the cd after loading the files has completed.
What motherboard? See my post in the Installation & Setup forum under "My_BSOD [solved]". I am using a Gigabyte mb also with an AMD64 3200 cpu.
Good luck.

Remove the dvd when you see the countdown to restart and you should get the boot options screen. Select Microsoft Windows if it is not the top entry (should be) and once the restart is under way replace the dvd. I have had a couple of installations where I got situations like that but wound up with a pefectly good installation and no problems with the boot options later.

I did the 4+ hour download of the zipped file and all I get is a readme.txt file. what did I do wrong?

A bad download I guess, try ordering the DVD. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

What you downloaded is an.iso image. You need to burn this image to either a DVD or a virtual drive. This has been discussed ad nauseum on this forum so you should be able to search (I know, so much harder than just having someone do it for you) the forum for instructions and recommended products.

i have a athlon 3200 64 bit proc. 1.5 gig of ram. 80 gig hd. and a gigabyte k8u-939 mobo. when i try to install vista, this is what happens. i start my pc with the dvd in the drive. it says to boot from cd/dvd press any key, so i do. the next screen says loading windows files... and a bar starts to fill up, from left to right across the screen. when the bar reaches all the way to the right, it reaches a flashing cursor, my system then restarts. then it takes me back to the press any key to boot from cd dvd. so from here i have pressed nothing, and my xp install boots up, i have pressed a key and the loading windows files... bar fills up again and ir restarts and does the same thing over again. i have taken the cd out after the loading windows files screen, hoping it would start the install, but it also starts my xp install. im pretty sure it shouldn't be this hard. but i dont know. and btw i even tried switching around my boot devices and still nothing helps. if anyone knows how to fix this plz reply

Are you booting from the cd? When I installed it, I was running XP and just stuck the DVD into the DVD drive and the Vista installer started with the graphical install.
My experience has been that when you see the press any key to boot from the cd and you press a key then you are essentially starting over again. When you don't press any keys the hard drive should boot and the installation should continue.
What is the boot order in your bios? Mine has hdd first, cdrom second, floppy third.
What
kind of hdd do you have? ide? What partitioning scheme are you using?
