Can't install...wants too much space?
The limit has to do with the amount of data that can be stored under a single registry key. Win98 stores the names of all installed fonts under one key in the registry. When you get somewhere around 700 or 800 fonts, that key fills up, and you can't install another font until you get rid of some.
